Microblading: What is microblading & how long does it last

Updated: Oct 10, 2024

Ever wish you could roll out of bed with perfectly shaped, flawless eyebrows? You know, the kind that frame your face just right and make you feel effortlessly put together? Well, welcome to the world of microblading—a beauty secret that’s turning those brow dreams into reality!

What is microblading?

Think of microblading as a semi-permanent tattoo for your eyebrows, which lasts around 18 months, but way more precise and natural-looking. It really is a specialised skill which takes a microblading artist years to master!

Instead of a tattoo machine you may have seen or experienced yourself, where you have an image permanently tattooed on your body. A microblading artist uses a handheld tool which looks like a pencil with ultra fine needles aligned in a row, resembling a "blade". This is dipped into a customised and specialised microblading pigment to draw individual hair-like strokes to in effect apply a "brow hair" where there should have been in an ideal world.

Here is an image of the microblading tool I use with a zoomed in image of the microblade on the right:

So does the microblading artist just use their creative license to microblade my new brows?

No, no, nooooooooooooooooo! That would be insane!

Your new brow shape is mapped out first. Everyone is different and as a PhiBrows Artist, I use your bone structure and your facial features to map out your brows, then use a specialised brow measuring PhiBrows application to ensure they are perfect. You'll be shown the brow shape and to make sure you're happy. Then we'll go through a few questions to customise your microblading colour. Only then will the microblading begin.

Not every microblading artist is the same but PhiBrows Microblading artists are trained for 6 months and have to pass 12 exams before they're licensed to microblade. PhiBrows Microblading artists a highly trained in hair strokes, brow hair pattern, skin etc. (If you want to read more about the difference between microblading and PhiBrows click here:

The magic of microblading happens. The microblading tool is used to draw on those tiny, hair-like strokes, filling in sparse areas and shaping your brows to perfection. Each stroke is meticulously placed to blend seamlessly with your natural brow hairs, creating a look that’s oh-so-natural.

Here is an example of my work with the before, the mapped out brows and the finished PhiBrows Microblading:

How long will the microblading appointment take?

They're 2 parts to the complete microblading process. The first, is where you'll have the main treatment and the appointment is around 2.5 hours.

The second appointment is 6 to 8 weeks later and lasts roughly 1.5 hours. This top up appointment is to ensure:

  1. Pigment retention: After your first microblading session, it's normal for pigment to fade by 20 to 50% as your skin heals and regenerates. The top up session allows for more pigment to be applied to achieve the desired depth and colour.

  2. Touching up some of the strokes: Sometimes, the pigment might heal lighter than expected or sometimes if the client is nervous the colour will be too dark then a lighter shade may have been used in the first treatment. Healing can vary across different areas of the brow, this can be because you may have an oily T-zone or are a side sleeper. The top up appointment gives the opportunity to get the microbladed hair strokes the perfect even colour.

  3. Extending the longevity of the results: The top-up helps to “lock in” the pigment, making your brows last longer. Without a top-up, your brows might fade more quickly, requiring more frequent touch-ups down the line.

Is microblading permanent?

No it's not. Microblading is semi-permanent make up and lasts around 18 months to 2 years. Unlike permanent tattoos you have on your body, microblading implants pigment into the upper dermis of the skin, specifically into the layer just below the epidermis. This depth is typically around 0.08mm to 0.15mm into he skin.

Here's a diagram of the skin depth of microblading:

How long does microblading last?

After both parts of the microblading treatment, your new microbladed brows will last around 18 months to 2 years before they've faded away. If you want to keep the microbladed look fresh, it's recommended you have an annual top up appointment.
