I’ve been on a Microblading course (3 days) and the PhiBrows course (6 Months), so this is my explanation of differences between the two courses.
In February 2019 I went on a 3 day Microblading course and during the first day and a half I was taught about health, safety and hygiene. I also learned about skin anatomy, which products to buy on Amazon, client consultation, colour theory and measuring the brows. I had an afternoon of practicing on synthetic skins and then on the final day I did the full microblading treatment on a real person. At the end of the third day I was given my Microblading certificate, then off I went qualified to be insured and to perform Microblading on clients.
I thought this was great at the time. Then over time people started asking if I was PhiBrows trained. Obviously at the time I wasn’t, but googled it and saw how hyper-realistic the brow hairs looked! I needed to learn how to make eyebrows look so amazingly real.
I researched The Phi Academy and discovered it is the only worldwide Microblading Brand and is reputable for thousands of reasons. I enrolled on the PhiBrows training course in London with Grand Master with honours, Dovile Zilinskaite, who trained in 2014 with the founder of The Phi Academy, Branko Babic.
On the first day of the PhiBrows course I was excited, even travelling on the tube to The Phi Academy London didn’t bother me. I felt from this day my life was going to change. I was going to be able to create hyper-realistic brows like the ones I had coveted on Instagram by Phi Artists for weeks.
Foolishly, I thought the skill would somehow be downloaded to me and I would be on my way. But the PhiBrows training road is a long one. The PhiBrows course is 2 days of live training and 6 months of technique training. I wasn’t disheartened but brought back to the realistic ways of how the world works: great things only happen if you work hard for them.
Learning about the Phi products and tools blew my mind. PhiBrows products are constantly being improved by specialised scientists, even creating vegan and animal-cruelty-free products, whilst ensuring the highest quality.
The Phi pigments are free from heavy metals and met the 2022 EU REACH regulations without making any adjustments to the formula, while many other Microblading pigment brands had to remove theirs from the market. Phi didn’t have to because they were ahead of the game! The Phi pigments stay true to colour: there are no orange, grey or purple brows in the world of Phi!
Over a million procedures have been performed using Phi pigments worldwide and there isn’t a single case of a reaction been reported. The Phi pigments have also been formulated not to migrate within the skin, keeping the hair strokes looking crisp and not blur over time.
This is supported by the Phi Blades, which are cut with lasers, so they’re laser sharp (pardon the pun) and glide seamlessly without any resistance, therefore causing less pain to the client. The “U” shape of the blade has been designed to keep the depth of each stroke consistent (I had previously been using a diagonal shaped blade, which I always found difficult to curve but that was how I was taught on the Microblading course).
In terms of brow mapping, there’s a tool called the Phi BB Compass which was invented by Branko Babic and is a game changer in how brows are mapped out. It sophistically and precisely maintains the golden ratio when measuring out brows to get the correct proportions.
There’s a Phi App which has a section in it to take a photo of the client’s brows and maps out a symmetrical grid to check the brow mapping is perfect; it really can’t be done just by eye. On the Microblading (non-PhiBrows) course I learnt to measure out brows with a calliper and inked string with several across the face measurements and judged by eye if the shape and symmetry looked correct. It was very messy!
The brow mapping, to me is the most important part because if the shape and symmetry of the brow mapping is incorrect, it’s all downhill from there. You could have the best hyper-realistic technique in the world but if one brow is bigger or higher than the other or one is higher or wonky, it’s a lost game!
PhiBrows have their own aftercare products to incorporate in an aftercare pack, which helps with healing, minimises scabbing and also with client home hygiene. I was told in the Microblading (non-PhiBrows) course all to give a sachet of vitamin E ointment and tell the client to only use it if their brows became very itchy. These are a few differences that spring to mind and give some insight into the superiority of the PhiBrows products and tools, compared to the multitude of supplies from suppliers I learned about on the Microblading course.
The knowledge, experience and positive vibes imparted by Dovile Zilinskaite, the Grand Master with honours, on the 2 days of PhiBrows live training were invaluable. I was ready to embark on the technique training, knowing that it was going to take time practising each section over and over again to be able to pass the 12 levels to achieve the PhiBrows Artist title.
The support is great, even after graduating to a PhiBrows Artist! There’s an online community, similar to Facebook but for Phi treatments where you get support from other artists, experts and doctors for advice. You can post photos of your work and people comment with feedback or simply “heart” it.
Students can ask for help if you’re stuck on a level. I didn’t get anything like this with the Microblading (non-Phi) course. For each level the technique is shown via videos in many different ways: computer generated, pen and paper, on the simulation skins and on a real person.
I spent hours upon hours practising on the same section of synthetic skins to get it perfect before submitting my work. To be promoted to the next level, you need to master each stage in the technique. You can move back down levels if you’re not producing the standard but my hard work paid off and that didn’t happen.
In the final levels, I would brow map any one I could! Then came the day when I received notification that I had passed the course and I was, at last, a PhiBrows Artist! I cried with happiness! There may have been a small celebratory dance to go along with the crying….
This is my experience of doing both a microblading course and the PhiBrows course. I’ve been asked multiple times, why did I go on the PhiBrows course years after I received my certificate for microblading?
The answer is simple, I wanted to create hyper-realistic brows, and this would never have been possible on a 3 day microblading course. After achieving my PhiBrows Artist status I know the hard work and dedication it takes to accomplish beautiful results. The combination of the PhiBrows training and Phi Products are far superior to the microblading course I went on.
In short, I received my microblading certificate, but I achieved my PhiBrows Artist status! I whole heartedly believe that the PhiBrows treatment as the best in the world and who wouldn’t want the finest when it comes to getting beautiful brows?
