Microneedling

Microneedling is a form of skin-needling and it increases the production of collagen, stimulates blood circulation and other healing factors by causing minor trauma to the skin.  It is a safe and effective way to rejuvenate skin, treat scars, reduce the appearance of large pores, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles.  Microneedling can be performed on most areas of the skin – it is not just a micro needling facial.

What is microneedling and how does it work?

Microneedling is a form of skin-needling and it increases the production of collagen, stimulates blood circulation and other healing factors by causing minor trauma to the skin.  It is a safe and effective way to rejuvenate skin, treat scars, reduce the appearance of large pores, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles.  Microneedling can be performed on most areas of the skin – it is not just a micro needling facial.

Is microneedling better with a Skin boosting Serum during the treatment?

Yes, serums have niacinamide (this helps build keratin which is a protein that keeps your skin firm and healthy) and Pepetide (a protein which is the building blocks for collagen, elastin and keratin) for effective brightening and anti-aging benefits. Certain serums can reduce appearance of wrinkles, brightens skin tone, add additional moisture as they contain HA, which helps dry skin and reduce pigmentation.

The benefits:

Facial rejuvenation:

Microneedling encourages collagen and elastin which will help to tighten and plump the skin so fine lines and wrinkles are ironed out.

Scars:

Reducing the appearance of scars: Microneedling has a great success rate for hypertrophic (raised scars) from injury and atrophic (sunken scars) from acne or chickenpox.  However, this treatment is not suitable for Keloid scars.

Acne:

Microneedling can be used to increase the absorption of the products which can benefit acne but unfortunately cannot be used on active acne due to the spread of bacteria, however, it can be performed around active areas.  If you are taking or have taken Roaccutane within the last six months, unfortunately micro needling cannot be performed due to the sensitivity of the skin.  Generally, acne scarring will need between 3 and 5 treatments.

Enlarged pores:

Enlarged pores are particularly common on the nose and cheeks but can be also be found elsewhere on the face.  Microneedling helps by increasing circulation to the area, which over time improves the texture of the skin and inducts collagen to the treated area, reducing the size and appearance of enlarged pores.

Stretch marks:

Stretch marks differ from scars resulting from trauma, they result from rapid expansion of skin where the collagen and elastin matrix is stretched out of alignment and the result is silver, pink or red lines. Microneedling can reduce the appearance of stretch marks but will take a few sessions to see the results.

Cellulite:

Cellulite occurs when fat cells become swollen and push through the collagen and elastin matrix and this matrix becomes distorted creating a dimpled appearance.  Microneedling can be used to treat cellulite by producing a new stronger collagen and elastin matrix, which can contain the fat cell within the matrix.

Hyper-pigmentation and age spots:

Scientifically the main cause of hyper-pigmentation is disorders of the melanocytes which produce melanin (pigment).  Microneedling can breakdown the pockets of melanin to regulate the signaling between the keratinocytes and melanocytes to normalise melanogenesis and melanocyte differentiation.

Rosacea:

Rosacea is associated with a hyper-sensitivity of the blood vessels in the face where the constant expansion of blood vessels causes the redness of the skin.  The constant expansion leads to the weakening of the collagen and connective tissues between the blood vessels.  Once this connection is damaged, the blood vessels can expand easily and occur closer to the surface of the skin making the appearance of rosacea more prominent, which can lead to scar tissue forming.  Microneedling can assist with rosacea by thickening and strengthening the collagen and elastin matrix.

Microneedling procedure

The room will be sanitized before you arrive.  When you arrive, we will go through the procedure, the desired outcome and health and safety which would have been emailed to you beforehand.  You can ask as many questions as you wish before the treatment takes place.  If you have opted to have a numbing cream this will need to be prescribed to you personally via a chemist or doctor, unfortunately topical (on the skin) numbing cream cannot be administered at Oh Hello You Beauty due to possible allergic reactions and county health and safety guidelines.  Age identification will be checked then you will read and sign the consent form and before photos will be taken.  You will then be asked to tie your hair back and to wear a hair net before laying on the treatment bed.  The treatment will start by the removal of all make-up and cleansing the area to be treated with a glycolic based cleanser followed by an alcohol wipe.  A one-time use pre-sanitized micro needle will be opened in front of you.  The microneedling will be performed with an automatic microneedling device.  After the microneedling has been completed the treated area will be cleansed and a face mask will be applied for ten minutes.  If you have decided you want the LED light therapy treatment added at an additional cost to the microneedling treatment this will then be performed.  An after photo will be taken and all aftercare advice will be reiterated to you.  Please ask any questions you have.

There will generally be redness where the treatment has occurred, which is normal and will usually clear within a few hours but can persist for up to 2 or 3 days in some cases.

You might experience some itchiness in the treated area due to the release of histamines, which is normal and can be reduced with anti-histamine medication.

The treated skin may feel tender to touch but this will subside.

In rare cases there may be bruising, swelling or a mark where the needles have entered the skin.

Frequently asked questions:

Does microneedling hurt?

On your consultation we will go through what your desired outcome is and talk about the treatment intensity required and if numbing cream should be used.

Is there a downtime and what is the downtime?

The downtime for microneedling is very low.  Skin redness and inflammation are common but will usually clear within a few hours but can persist up to 2 or 3 days in some cases.

How often can I repeat the microneedling treatment?

Every 4 to 6 weeks.

Is Microneedling different from a derma roller?

Both are a form of skin-needling.  The difference is a microneedling pen (which is used at Oh Hello you Beauty) the needles work in an up and down vertical motion to penetrate the skin, while a derma roller penetrates the skin at an angle.  We at Oh Hello You Beauty use a microneedling pen because derma rollers tend to tear through the skin causing more side effects and therefore a longer recovery time.
